City's Newest Form Of Art

The city's most recent if not controversial project is now complete. Hammond's newest form of civic ornamentation will reside at the southeast corner of Hohman Avenue and Rimbach Street and take the shape of a pavilion sculpture. Designed and created by noted artist David Black, the artwork will rise to a height of 27 feet and be composed of white aluminum in various sizes and shapes, set on top of polished granite columns. The focal point will be a stream of cascading water, falling into a pond in the middle of the sculpture. Evenings the sculpture will be illuminated to give the effect of a gigantic lantern.

A formal dedication ceremony took place on Saturday August 21, 1999 at 1:00 p.m. In the future, it is expected that the Hammond Rotunda will become a city landmark, much like the "Man of Steel" sculpture located in Harrison Park. Soon to join the city's newest art treasure will be the new stained glass sculpture by famed artist David Chihuly which will be housed in the new Federal Court House nearing completion just two blocks south on Hohman Avenue. The new Federal Court House structure is scheduled to open at the end of this year.
