now you see it bridge just before demolition now you don't bridge after demolition
The old Calumet Avenue iron lift bridge over the Grand Calumet River just north of Michigan Street is now just a memory. A recent bridge replacement project taken on the the Indiana State Highway Department has lead to the demise of this long time city landmark. The aging structure will be replaced by a modern concrete viaduct. Work should be completed by the end of the year baring any unforeseen setbacks to the project. The former span dated back to the early half of the nineteenth century. Although the bridge was built so it could be lifted to let boats pass through, it has reportedly never been lifted.
