Brief Biography
From a large family of fourteen children. Irv grew up in the central part of the city and attended Maywood Elementary and Hammond High School. He was named the Hammond Times Athlete of the year in 1957, where he played football, basketball, baseball and track for the Wildcats. Upon his graduation from high school he went on to attend Northwestern University.
In 1961 Irv was drafted by the Philadelphia Eagles, in the seventh round of the NFL draft. Later in 1966 he was traded to the Los Angles Rams. Then in 1969, Irv returned back to the Philadelphia Eagles and became a player/coach. 1970 saw his retirement from playing football, when became just a coach for the Eagles.

From 1971 to 1994, Irv Cross had a twenty-three career at CBS Sports as a NFL analyst and commentator. During his long stay at CBS Sports he worked beside the legendary sports commentator Brent Musburger and oddsmaker Jimmy "The Greek". On March 1st 1996, Irv was named the athletic director for Idaho State University at Pocatello, Idaho, where he still is today.
On April 1st, 1980, Irv Cross became the first recipient of the Hammond Achievement Award. This award originated as a way for the City of Hammond to honor and give recognition each year to a person educated in Hammond who has achieved national or international fame in the field of the arts, science or business and industry. A plaque bearing a listing of the major achievements of the recipient along with the seals of the City of Hammond and The United States, will be on permanent display by the Hammond Historical Society in the Community Room of the Main Hammond Public Library.
