The State Street Commercial Historic District -

Location / Historical Significance:

This two block long strip of mostly commercial buildings is located on the eastern fringes of the city's downtown. It covers mainly the 400 and 500 blocks of State Street from Bulletin Avenue eastward to Sohl Avenue, and includes both the north and south sides of the street. The district includes commercial and public use buildings, together with the Hohman Avenue District, both districts form the city's downtown.

Once a vibrant area full of commerce and trade, is now but a shell of it's glorious past. Due in part largely to the construction of expansive suburban shopping malls during the 1960's and 1970's.

Architectural Styles:

The vast majority of the area's more notable buildings date back to the 1920's to 1940's a period rapid growth and expansion for the city. Of note are a many large four and five story commercial structures. The L. Fish Furniture Building displays expert craftsmanship with it's impressive glazed terra cotta facade. The nearby Lincoln Hotel also exhibits a fine ornate terra cotta facade. The Siefer Furniture Building constructed in the Colonial Revival style was built in 1925.

The district's public use buildings include the Federal Building at 507 State Street, built in the Neoclassical style, was completed in 1939. Also the Main Public Library is constructed of Indiana Limestone, and is one of the district's newest buildings built in 1968, on the site of the old State Theatre.
