The Harrison Park Mini-Museum was opened this year to mark the one-hundred year anniversary of the park's founding in 1898, by the Harrison Park Neighborhood Association.
Housed in an original park structure built in the early 1920's, that served as a gate house and a park maintenance building. The Mini-Museum is still in the finishing stages, with more work to be completed. Inside is a recently completed mural covering three walls, painted by artists from the new Substation #9 Art Gallery on Fayette Street in Downtown Hammond. The mural is a depiction of historical references to the park and it's nearby environs over the last one hundred years.
Along with the mural visitors can also view pictures of the park and neighborhood from its early beginning, newspaper articles about events in the park, postcards and historical information on many of the homes near the park. A memory book will highlight "old-timers" recollections of the park, or one can add their own memories to the book.
Harrison Park Mini-Museum will be staffed by volunteers from the Harrison Park Neighborhood Association and will be open mainly on weekends from 12:30 to 3:30 during the summer months and special events. If you would like more information please contact: The Harrison Park Neighborhood Association.
