Location / Historical Significance:
The Harding Park Historic District is located in the northern section of the city in an area commonly called "Hessville". Consisting of the north side of 163rd Place bounded on the east by Parrish Avenue and on the west by Delaware Avenue. The district is one of the most smallest of the historical districts in Hammond, but it is still noteworthy none the less. This residential neighborhood only a block long, is made up of a unique type of architectural housing style known as the Chicago Bungalow, a very distinguishable variation of the classic bungalow style of homes. The Harding Park Historic District is very typical of the city's early twentieth century working-class neighborhoods. Many of these homes are still owned by long time or life long residents.

Architectural Styles:
The Chicago Bungalow is made distinguishable by the offset entryway and the projecting bay on its front facade. The bay windows usually exhibit decorative detailing such as sills, lintels or stone corner blocks. The modest variety of surface details gives these bungalow style homes a pleasing visual appearance. This style of architecture is quite unique to the city, especially being concentrated in one area. The ten Chicago Bungalow style homes that comprise the largest part of the district, all being constructed in the same time frame of 1927, suggest that they were all probably all built by one contractor. Three interpretations of the Chicago Bungalow can be found at 3107, 3111, and 3117 163rd Place. Several other styles of homes, Colonial Revival, Vernacular and Contemporary, finish off the block.
