Davis Avenue Historical District

Location / Historical Significance:

The Davis Avenue Historical District is located in Hammond's northern most section in an area more commonly known as Robertsdale. This mainly residential district stretches north from 121st Street to Stanton Avenue. The district's only public building is the George Rogers Clark High School. This Colonial Revival style structure covers an entire block.

In the early beginnings of the twentieth century several large industries, American Maize Products and the Standard Oil Company constructed massive sized factories to the west and north of the district. With this a large number of workers needed to work in the factories were drawn into the area, thus resulting in a large scale burst of new house construction. The district's many modest sized homes and apartment buildings are quite typical of the city's many neighborhoods of this time frame.

Architectural Styles:

As this this and nearby neighborhoods grew in response to the area's rapid industrial and commercial expansion, the Davis Avenue Historical District and it's surrounding environs were soon filled with many modest style homes and apartment buildings.

The predominant and most popular style of residence in the Davis Avenue District is the bungalow. Four different types of the bungalow style are illustrated at 1738 to 1748 Davis Avenue, and are quite typical of the area's many examples.

The Spanish Eclectic, an architectural style not widely seen in the city of Hammond, can be found at 1926 and 1647 Davis Avenue. Scaled down versions of many period revival home styles can be viewed in the district. The homes at 2035 and 1821 Davis Avenue show the Colonial Revival Cottage architectural style. The English Cottage style of homes can be found at 1944, 1916 and 1648 Davis Avenue.

Along with the district's many single-family residences are a fair number of period apartment buildings. Although many of the district's apartment buildings are built on a much larger scale then their adjoining one family homes, they do blend well into the streetscape as a whole. This is due in part to the uniform use of building materials. Some of the district's typical apartment flats are located at 2029, 1722 and 1636 Davis Avenue.
