What a payback after such a mild December. Mother Nature blasted the city with some 16 inches of snowfall on Friday and Saturday. Strong winds piled the snow into 2 and 3 foot drifts. The brutal winter storm forced the closure of the Hammond Public Library, the Hammond Civic Center and Woodmar Mall. The bad weather also forced the cancelation of the city's bus service. The storm was somewhat less disruptive since it occured over the weekend.
Major roads, arterial streets and most residential streets were cleared of snow over Saturday night and Sunday morning. The city street department had some 24 snow plows along with other support vehicles working throughout the storm and afterwards. Making the city byways passable was quite a monumental task.
