Grand Opening Saturday, March 15, 2003An estimated crowd of around 4,000 people were on hand to celebrate the grand opening of the brand new Jean Shepherd Community Center here in Hammond. Nestled in Hessville's Dowling Park, the new Jean Shepherd Community Center finally opened its doors to the public after several construction delays. The expansive 41,000 square foot building will serve as a gathering place for the south Hammond neighborhood. The new community center serves as a fitting lasting and tribute to one of Hammond's hometown boys Jean Shepherd.
The facility features over 30,000 square feet of gymnasium/exhibition space. The gym consists of two regulation size basketball courts, a volleyball court, and a 1/10 mile indoor walking/jogging track. Another 8,000 plus square feet of space is dedicated to administration offices and multi functional rooms. These multi purpose rooms include an arts & craft room, computer room, exercise room, dining and kitchen area. A 120 car parking lot fronts the structure at 3031 Mahoney Drive.
