Prominent Hammond banker Walter H. Hammond, son of the late Thomas Hammond, a former congressman from this district, passed away at his home on Hohman Avenue in Hammond on the morning of May 23, 1914. His death was attributed to Bright's disease for which he was diagnosed to have some two years ago.

At the begining of May, in a strange twist of fate, Mr. Hammond was thought to be making a recovery from his illness enough to be released from the Michael Reese Hospital in Chicago where he had spent some eleven weeks. Three weeks later his condition would take a turn for the worse. On the evening of May 22, 1914 he would lapse into a coma and never regain consciousness, he died the following morning.

Walter Hammond was born in Detroit, Michigan, the second oldest of four children. He was only the young age of three when he arrived here in Hammond with his parents. His grandfather the late George H. Hammond, was the owner and founder of the G. H. Hammond Packing Company for which the city of Hammond was named.

Mr. Hammond was a savvy businessman and a well liked civic and social leader. Walter Hammond was evolved with many social and civic organizations in the city. Some of those groups that he was a part of were, The Hammond Chamber of Commerce where he served as director, The First Baptist Church, serving as the chairman of the board of directors, Treasurer of the Hammond Country Club, Treasurer and Assistant Secretary of the Hammond Saving and Trust Company, Director and Treasurer of the Northern States Life Insurance Company.

Funeral services will be held at the First Baptist Church in Hammond and burial will take place at the family plot located in Oak Hill Cemetery also in Hammond. Mr. Hammond was survived by his wife and four children, Harold age 15, Florence age 13, Kenneth age 11, and Walter Jr. age 8.
