Dietrich's Bakery had a formal grand opening of their new modern facility on Saturday October 17, 1911. The bakery which has been in Hammond from its start was founded in 1892. Their new building is up to date in every way. The entire shop is white from floor to ceiling, even the walls are white. Equipment inside the bakery consists of one of the largest ovens in the country, with a baking surface of just over 200 square feet, and measures sixteen by thirteen feet. It is heated by means of a flue system. The only oven that's larger is located in Chicago. The mixer has a capacity of three barrels, which it mixes in eight minutes. The loaf molder has the capability to shape three thousand loaves of bread every hour. Dietrich's also has the distinction of being the largest bakery in the state north of Indianapolis. F. C. Dietrich was one of the early organizers of the baker's union here in Hammond, dating back to 1902. Dietrich's Bakery was also the very first union bakery in the city. In 1915 the bakery employed twelve people including Mr. Dietrich and his four sons.
