| Hammond Steel Barrel - - - Date Line: 1911 |
The Hammond Steel Barrel Company - becomes one of the newest industries in the city here in 1911. The company was incorporated with capitol stock valued at $100,000. A majority of the stock in the Hammond Steel Barrel Company is owned by investors from Ohio, only a small percentage was purchased locally and owned by Hammond residents. Construction of the plant is expected to begin shortly and will be located along the Grand Calumet River, in an industrial area of the city.
The new steel barrel was invented and perfected in the town of Napoleon, Ohio. However it was later discovered that the cost of shipping the steel from the mills in Pittsburgh and the Calumet Area was $28 a car load verses $9 a car load from Gary to Hammond.
Hammond Steel Barrel has five patents and will manufacture the new steel barrels in various types and styles. Steel barrels are noted noted for their durability and are expected to replace the wooden barrel, for the shipment of petroleum by products and other chemicals which are not affected by iron. New steel barrels are both cheaper, selling for $4.50 each and are also much more durable and longer lasting than the older wooden barrels.
One hundred workers are expected to be employed at the facility, at the start. It is expected that the concern will grow into one of the largest industries in the Calumet Region, rivaling the simplex Railway Appliance Company also located in Hammond.
