Dave Lovgren Food Shop opens in a new location/building -- Now located right next to Saint Margaret's Hospital on Douglas Street. The new storefront is a charming English designed architecture complete with gables and a red tile roof. Lovgren the owner of this fine establishment that bears his name, was the former head of the grocery department at the Lion Store in Hammond, where he had twenty-two years of experience in the retail grocery business.
The building housed many grocery departments including a meat department which featured the most modern butcher shop equipment to date. It was comprised of over forty feet of refrigerated counter space. The canned goods section consisted of both domestic and imported brand varieties, and was the most extensive of all of the departments in the store. The fresh produce department also featured both domestic and imported grown fruits and vegetables.
The mezzanine floor situated at the back of the building housed a "Special Feature Display Department", a Deli Kitchen and the stores office. For those busy homemakers who were unable to leave their homes during the morning and afternoon hours. Three telephone lines were staffed by operators who's sole purpose was to take grocery orders the phone for home delivery.
Mr. Lovgren's successful business was brought about by his courteous, prompt and efficient service to all of his customers. Prior to this move, the store was located on Hohman Avenue for the past five years. Below are some sale items and prices as they appeared in advertisements from around the era of 1927.
