First section of the new larger Lion Store -- is nearly completed and is set to open in several weeks from this date of Monday May 14, 1928. This first portion at 85,000 square feet, is only part of a entire store that will contain a total of 225,000 square feet of floor space. The second portion of the store will add another 140,000 square feet. Upon its final completion scheduled to be in November of 1928. This unique picture above shows the northern half of the store at Hohman and Sibley, with the southern half yet to be built.
In order to help facilitate the move the company held a large removal sale, with the propose being, to clear out as much stock as possible. The actual move into the new building is set to take place on Saturday May 26, with the new store opening on Monday of the following week. The store will be fitted with all new fixtures and furnishings, from the basement to the fourth floor. Total cost will be $2,000,000 for the building and equipment.
With this move the store will be returning to the very spot where it was first founded some twenty years ago. Upon the completion of the second part of the structure, it will become one of the largest retail stores in the state, second only to one in Indianapolis. The building's foundations were built so they could hold an additional two stories, as future growth would warrant. The need never did materialize, so the building remained at four floors in height.
