New Maywood Theatre

-- celebrated its grand opening in vaudeville style on Christmas 1927. The building was located on Columbia Avenue, with the main entrance facing Morton Avenue Conkey Street. The structure was of "modern" Spanish architecture, constructed of steel reinforced concrete and brick, with a terra cotta facing. It was the latest in theatre design.

The playhouse had a seating capacity for 1,000 patrons. A specially designed lighting system was incorporated in theatre's dome and ceiling in order to enhance the show house's productions. The building was also home to apartments, offices and several stores. This new structure was attached to a existing storefront. Total construction costs came in around the neighborhood of $250,000.

The best vaudeville acts and motion pictures available, were featured for the public's enjoyment. Also new and novel entertainment features were be shown when available. Saturday and Sunday matinees were presented to the children.

The last vestige of this theater block was just demolished a year or two ago, to make way for a new industrial park development.
