Sibley and Hohman - - At the heart of Downtown Hammond, here we look westwards towards Stateline Avenue, the town of Calumet City on the Indiana-Illinois border is in the far distance. This photograph was quite possibly taken during the summer of 1937, note as the shoppers scurry from store to store without any coats or jackets on. The streetcar tracks and trolly lines of The Green Line are quite dominate in the foreground and center of the photo.

The Goldblatt's Department Store is located at the left. This expansive four story building occupied an entire city block. Goldblatt's was a favorite stop for the many shoppers who would converge on the downtown area. Many came from as far away as the south side of Chicago to do their shopping at Goldblatt's. Located to the right is the Walgreen's Drug Store, here one could get their prescriptions filled and pick up a malt or soda at the fountain shop.

This scene was taken from the Woolworth's 5¢ and 10¢ Store, located directly across the street. Now a days this sight is all but a memory, a majority of the buildings have been razed, as this area undergoes redevelopment by the city. Even this very street corner is no more, as Sibley Street has been straighten and realigned.
