Bulletin Avenue - - - Date Line: 1950's

downtown hammond bulletin avenue just off state street

Near the center of this picture is Bulletin Avenue - - A short two block long street, which still exists today. On the left hand side is State Street, an extension of the downtown's Hohman Avenue main business district. Storefront after storefront lined both sides of the street. Here one could purchase, clothing, shoes, furniture and appliances, from such stores as Sears Roebuck, Edward C. Minas, J. W. Millikan Sporting Goods, L. Fish Furniture, and Siefer Furniture.

The photograph above, shows us the jam packed parking lots Now the site of the Dan Rabin Transit Plaza located between the Nickel Plate railroad Now the Norfolk Southern railroad and the Monon railroad --- Now abandoned --- but is a planned rail corridor to south Lake County.

Indeed, what a strange photo this is - - - not a train in site! But, who would have known back then, that the railroads which were instrumental in the founding of the city, would be the downtown's undoing. The autos that brought droves of shoppers downtown, drove them to the suburban malls constructed in the 1960's and 1970's, as many tired of the constant train tie ups which were all but commonplace. Take a look at the State Street of today.
