Roth's Tavern - - Here's a look back at a brand new century, in a
young town called Hammond, Indiana. This scene shows the tavern, located on
the south side of the 100 block of State Street. The actual address of this
establishment was 140 State Street, but the numbering system was changed in
1930 --- See Street Smart --- During
this era there were some 78 taverns, saloons and restaurants where one could
quench ones thirst with distilled spirits. Some twenty years later the event
of prohibition would, dwindle that number down to zero, as alcohol became
illegal. Much of the liquor consumed here, may have come from just across
town. The Hammond Distilling Company
produced some 25,000 gallons of whiskey per day. Although the gentlemen in
the above photograph are unidentified, we can tell just by looking, that the
two gents in the center of the picture are the bartenders or saloon keepers
as they may have been called back then.
