The Lake County Superior Court Building on March 30th, 1918
The grand lady of justice, sits in the distance at the corner of Hohman Avenue and Rimbach Street. First constructed in 1902, with the cornerstone being set on September 18th 1903. It was built at a cost of around $110,000. A new Lake County Superior Court Building was dedicated in 1972 on Russell Street, one block east of Hohman Avenue. Sadly the old Court House building was demolished in 1973. What a magnificent landmark it would make if it were still around today.
The empty lot in the foreground of this photograph is the southeast corner of Hohman Avenue and Fayette Street. Today this field is far from vacant. Now stands the tallest structure in the city, the Bank Calumet building. The architecturally notable bank building rises to tower ten stories above the surface streets of downtown. It remains since it's construction in 1923 to this date, the highest building in Hammond.
